How to Reduce One’s Exposure to Toxins



Everyone knows that toxins are all around us. Unfortunately, many people just throw up their hands and give up trying to stay away from them. My wife’s dentist recently said, “Why even try to avoid toxins when they are everywhere,” when I told him that we don’t use toothpaste because of the toxins in it like fluoride. However, I refute this notion of simply giving in to allowing toxins to infiltrate my body. There are many things each of us can do to keep toxins out of our bodies, and avoiding toxins will have the added benefits of lessening the manufacturing of these toxins in the first place and lessen the amount of toxins in the environment.


So, here are the 31 best ways to get chemicals and toxins out of one’s life:

1. Eat only certified organic food

2. Don’t drink tap water; drink local safely tested spring water or Raw Living Water (http://www.greenharmonyliving.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9_368)

3. Phase out use of all plastics used for food and beverage storage, including food containers, bottles, cling wrap, and bags; instead use glass food container and bottles, and plant based, biodegradable plastic bags(1)


4. Stop using canned foods since they contain BPA’s; use fresh produce instead(1)


5. Reduce consumption of meat, dairy, and eggs since these foods contain higher toxin levels; focus on a plant based diet and eat smaller portions of animal foods 


6. Eat only wild caught, sustainably harvested seafood since conventional fish contains high BPA levels(1)

7. Use a ceramic coffee mug, a stainless steel or glass water bottle instead of plastic beverage containers(1)


8. When dining out eat at restaurants serving only organic and vegan foods, unless you know the restaurant serves only organic meat and dairy(1)


9. Avoid processed sweeteners like sugar; instead use natural sweeteners like honey and stevia


10. Phase out all processed foods with unfamiliar ingredients, including highly processed oils; instead go for low processed or fresh, local, organic foods and fresh produce


11. Eat more cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and kale that metabolize estrogen in its harmful state(1)


12. Avoid Styrofoam since it is full of toxins and is not recyclable; use stainless steel containers for dining leftovers(1)


13. Avoid synthetic fragrances of all kinds, i.e. perfume, cologne, air fresheners, sprays, etc.; instead use organic essential oils, like a few drops of lavender oil mixed with spring water in a spray bottle and spray on clothing and the air(1)

14. Phase out synthetic cosmetics and personal care products that are ripe with chemicals and toxins; instead use only organic, vegan certified beauty care products(1)

15. Avoid cash register receipts at all costs since they contain extremely high levels of BPA; simple refuse receipts for minor purchases and ask for 8.5 x 11” paper printouts for larger purchases; wash your hands after handling receipts(1)


16. Clear your kitchen of all non stick and aluminum cookware since they both contain large amounts of chemicals and toxins; use cast iron and high quality stainless steel instead(1)


17. Add water filters to kitchen and bath since many toxins are absorbed through the skin(1)


18. In the home, avoid chemical laden, conventional clothing, bed sheets, mattresses, furniture, and so on; instead go for organic versions


19. When doing home renovation and building construction, avoid conventional building materials and instead use only chemical and toxin free paints, plywood, particle boards, lumber, insulation, carpets, etc.


20. In the office, avoid conventional appliances and electronics; instead use green certified, chemical and toxin free appliance, electronics (www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/campaigns/toxics/hi-tech-highly-toxic/company-report-card/), furniture, and furnishings


21. Phase out plastics everywhere since plastics in indoor environments help pollute the air; instead choose natural materials like wood, metal, glass


22. Ban smoking in your home or office and avoid any smoke filled environments


23. Avoid conventional cleaning products which are full of toxic chemicals; instead make your own home cleaners with natural products like lemon, vinegar, and borax

24. Choose an electric vehicle or do without a car since gas burning autos contribute to our petroleum dependent society, pollute the environment, and are full of toxins in the interior; bicycling, walking, and mass transit are options to driving

25. Skip chlorine and bromine sanitized swimming pools since they are a cesspool of toxins; instead find a natural body of water to swim in (www.swimmingholes.org) or find a pool that is chemical free(2)


26. Detoxify your body through fasting, juice diets, and organic herbal supplements

   
27.Open your windows at night to let in the fresh air when sleeping, even in the winter time since air pollution is a major problem 

28. Exercise on a regular basis to keep your body fit and help with detox


29. Eat dinner at 5:00 pm and don’t eat after 8:00 pm; this gives your body time to digest dinner and detoxify at night


30. Expose your body to sunlight for a few minutes in the morning or late afternoon to ensure adequate levels of Vitamin D


31. Get adequate rest; go to bed by 10:00 pm to ensure adequate sleep time and darkness which allows the body to create melatonin
